In an initiative that underscores European-level cooperation, the Hellenic Air Force Academy, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC) of the European Union, hosted for the third consecutive year, from November 25 to 29, 2024, at the Dekelia Air Base, the common module titled “Space Applications for Security and Defence.”
This event featured an international and interdisciplinary body of speakers, including distinguished experts from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen), the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), and the European Space Agency (ESA).
Additionally, esteemed professors and researchers from the Hellenic Air Force Academy, the Hellenic Space Center, and the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens were present.
In this context, 140 students from seven European military academies (France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, and Portugal), Security Corps Academies (Hellenic Police Officers School, Fire Academy Officers School, Coast Guard Officers School), and Higher Education Institutions had the opportunity to gain knowledge about the potential of space technologies to enhance the operational effectiveness of security and defence bodies.
The topics covered included a wide range of subjects such as security provided by space and security within space, the space capabilities of leading countries and the European Union. Additionally, the role of space in the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and the challenges faced by the EU in the space domain were analyzed, with particular emphasis on lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.
With this initiative, the Hellenic Air Force Academy aimed to strengthen international cooperation and develop a common European approach to space security.
