Common Module on Space Applications for Security and Defence 2025 at the Hellenic Air Force Academy

The Hellenic Air Force Academy will organize the Common Module on “Space Applications for Security and Defence” from Monday, 24 to Friday, 28 November 2025, at the Dekelia Air Base, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC).

This teaching module is based on the Common Module Curriculum of the European Initiative for the Exchange of Young Officers (EMILYO), which constitutes a core component of the EU’s educational activities. In the modern and crucial field of Space – recognized internationally as the fifth operational domain – this module promotes a better understanding of the role of space applications in security and defence.

This initiative, proposed by the Hellenic Air Force Academy and approved by the ESDC in 2018, aims to enhance strategic and operational capability through the use of space technologies. The main objective of this module, which was updated in 2025 following a proposal by the Hellenic Air Force Academy and approved by the ESDC, is to introduce students from European military academies and Greek Higher Education Institutions to the overall concept of how space is operationally used in the context of security and defence.

Through this training, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the capabilities and applications of space technologies in strengthening security and defence. Topics will include the emergence of the space age as a result of the lack of information sharing between superpowers during the Cold War, basic components and functions of space systems, the main types of satellites and their applications, as well as the strategic and tactical dimensions of space.

The module will also cover the concept of security from space and security in space, space activities of leading space-faring nations, the EU’s space capabilities, and the role of space in the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the EU. In addition, operational and legal challenges highlighted by the war in Ukraine will be examined, along with key trends and future perspectives in the space domain.

Lectures will be delivered by professors and instructors from the Hellenic Air Force Academy, other military institutions, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as distinguished speakers from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), the EU Satellite Centre (SatCen), the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), and the European Space Agency (ESA).
