Common module on Space Applications for Security and Defence 11 – 15 December 2023

The Hellenic Air Force Academy will organize, from Monday 11th to Friday 15th December 2023, at Dekelia Air Base, the ‘Common module on Space Applications for Security and Defence’, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC) of the European Union.

The seminar is based on the Standard Curriculum of EMILYO (European initiative for the exchange of young officers. It constitutes a key component of the EU’s educational activities in the Space domain and promotes a better understanding of the role of Space Applications in Security and Defence, which the Hellenic Air Force Academy proposed and the ESDC approved in 2018. The main objective of this module is to introduce over 100 students from five European Academies to the general perception of how Space is operationally utilized within the aforementioned framework.

Issues to be analyzed include the start of the space era as a result of the lack of intelligence between superpowers during the Cold War, basic elements of space systems, main types of satellites, and strategic, tactical, and political dimensions of space. The space activities of leading space-faring nations, the concept of Space Security, the role of Space in the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the European Union, as well as the challenges faced by the EU, along with trends, will also be discussed.

The instructors and lecturers will come from the Hellenic Air Force Academy, other military organizations, and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as distinguished speakers from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), the EU Satellite Centre (SatCen), the EU Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA), the European Space Agency (ESA).
