Common module on Space Applications for Security and Defence 2024

The Hellenic Air Force Academy will organize a common module on “Space Applications for Security and Defence” from Monday, November 25 to Friday, November 29, 2024, at the Dekelia Air Base, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC).

The common module is based on the Standard Curriculum of the European initiative for the exchange of young officers (EMILYO), which is a key component of the EU’s educational activities. In the modern and critical field of Space, recognized as the fifth operational domain internationally, the aim is to improve understanding of the role of Space Applications in Security and Defence.

This initiative, proposed by the Hellenic Air Force Academy and approved by the ESDC in 2018, aims to enhance strategic and operational capability through the utilization of space technologies.

The main objective of this module is to introduce over 140 students from six European military academies and Greek Higher Education Institutions to the general concept of how Space is used operationally in the aforementioned context. Through this education, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the capabilities and applications of space technologies in enhancing security and defence.

Topics to be analyzed include the dawn of the space age as a result of the lack of intelligence between the superpowers during the Cold War, basic elements and functions of space systems, the main types of satellites and their applications, as well as the strategic and tactical dimensions of Space. The concepts of security provided from Space and security within Space will be discussed, along with the space activities of leading space-faring nations, the space capabilities of the European Union, and the role of Space in the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). Additionally, the challenges faced by the EU following the war in Ukraine, as well as various trends and future prospects in the field of Space, will be examined.

In the Common Module will teach  professors and lecturers from the Hellenic Air Force Academy, other military organizations, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and distinguished speakers from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), the EU Satellite Centre (SatCen), the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), and the European Space Agency (ESA).
